***Caroline Fung***

¡¡¡600 entrevistas!!!

ENTREVISTA ORIGINAL
Would you like to tell us your name?
Caroline Fung.

How old are you?
I’m in my 40’s.

What country are you born?
I was born in England, and grew up in Hong Kong . Spent a couple of years in Taiwan when I was young.

Where do you live now?
Sydney, Australia. My family migrated here when I was in my late teens.

When did you start with this hobby?

How did you start?
I attended a craft show with my sister-in-law, and saw a lady there demonstrating bead stringing. I was intrigued and bought a beading kit from her stall. Got hooked ever since!

Who are three artists who inspire you the most?
It’s difficult to name just three artists who have inspired me the most in my jewellery journey. I do a bit of everything including seed bead work, metal clay, wirework, enamelling, polymer clay, and a little lampwork. I’m also a member of a lapidary club where I learnt to cab stones and do a little traditional silver smithing. When I first started wirework, I bought some on-line tutorials from Eni Oken, and her work inspired me tremendously at the time. Then I ventured into seed bead, and bought the book co-authored by Sherry Serafini and Heidi Kummli. These days I love to do mixed media pieces, combining different materials and techniques I’ve learnt over the years. I have found great inspirations in the works from many painters, mixed media artists and some unknown ancient ethnic jewellery designers.

How many hours a week do you dedicate to this hobby?
Not enough! I work pretty long hours in my day job, and I travel a fair bit, so there isn’t much time left for me to bead and make jewellery. I try to do it whenever I get the time.

Is this more than your hobby? Is it your job?
No, this is just a hobby at present. Maybe when I retire from my day job one day, I’ll turn it into a real job!

What other hobbies do you have?
I have been a serial crafter ever since I was young – I made my first hand sewn felt stuff toy when I was 6, and my mother sent me to an elderly Master Painter to learn traditional Chinese painting when I was in my early teens. Some other hobbies I have had include: scrapbooking, oil painting, china (porcelain) painting, miniature (doll houses etc), rubber stamping and paper craft, folk art, and collecting and making teddy bears and porcelain dolls. Since I started beading, I haven’t really done much of these other hobbies. The techniques I learnt in these other hobbies, however, have been extremely useful in my mixed media jewellery work.

Would you like to tell us a little bit more about you?
Ummm, let me think.... I’m married, and my husband is very patient and supportive of my hobby. He would buy me beads sometimes when he travels. We both work as medical doctors, specialising in pathology. I am a member of an on-line forum called the Australian Beading Forum. My strength is my obsessive trait (I think, LOL), which forces me to pay attention to details in my work, and my weakness is chocolates (anytime)! I am a bit of a day dreamer sometimes, and many of my jewellery pieces have stories behind them. One of my dreams is to write a beading book one day, showcasing the works of our Australian beading/jewellery making talents. I guess you can read more about me in my blog.
