***Karen Olwen Designs***

ENTREVISTA ORIGINAL
Would you like to tell us your name? How old are you?
My name is Karen Guthrie, and I am 48 years old.

What country are you born? Where do you live now?
I live in the beautiful Pacific Northwest, in the United States, and my jewelry is often inspired by our beautiful forests.

When did you start with this hobby? How did you start?
I mainly focus now on copper - my desire is to promote copper jewelry as a gorgeous and viable alternative to more expensive silver and gold. I am mostly focused on etched copper at the moment - the process is like magic - I draw my designs, etch them and then I have a wonderful miniature piece of art to fashion into jewelry...:)
I also create tutorials for some of the processes I use - I love to see people get excited when they realize that they too can begin to create beautiful things. Creating makes people happy, and happy people make a happy world..:)
I've been making things almost my whole life, since I taught myself to crochet from a book at age 8. I am fascinated by how things are made, and have experimented with just about every medium you can think of, but my true love is jewelry - wire and metalsmithing in particular. I've been making jewelry for about 25 years now, but have only been selling for a couple of years.

Who are three artists who inspire you the most?
I am inspired by many things and people - Mary Tucker of Wired Elements is truly an inspiration, and many, many others - too many to name here. I spend a lot of time here on the internet just soaking in all of the different jewelry styles and techniques, and trying out different tutorials whenever I can, so that I have a large bank of skills to draw on when trying to make a piece come to life.

Is this more than your hobby? Is it your job?
I currently am in school full time, and when I'm not in school, I am making jewelry - it's become much more than a hobby, and I hope to someday make a living at it. Currently my jewelry can be seen in all ten Made In Oregon stores, and I hope to expand soon into other stores as well.

What other hobbies do you have?
In addition to making jewelry I also enjoying playing various musical instruments (some well, some not so well..:) and hiking and camping in the gorgeous Pacific Northwest outdoors. I find that my personality also needs structure and logic in addition to creativity, so I really enjoy the math and science classes that I am taking, and I work professionally in the accounting field.

Would you like to tell us a little bit more about you?
I have three beautiful, talented, and wonderful children who are all grown up now, and wonderful friends and family. I am lucky to live in an amazingly beautiful place, and very lucky to be able to devote my time to the things that make me happy in life.
